Vancouver Courier - Flower Power Leipzig Celebrates 30 Years with Free Beer and Jam Sessions

Flower Power, a music bar in Leipzig, is marking its 30th anniversary on November 7 with a celebration featuring free beer and live jam sessions. The venue at Riemannstraße 42 has been a fixture of the city's nightlife for three decades.

Opened in 1996 by founder André Streng, the bar was established as one of Leipzig's more eccentric music venues. Since 2017, Streng's brother Daniel Weise has managed the operation. In its early years, a half-liter of Ur-Krostitzer beer cost five Deutsche Mark, and daily "Rock DJs" provided the soundtrack.

Over time, Flower Power evolved into an institution for various groups. During the early 2000s, it served as a Sunday after-party destination where guests could listen to jam sessions instead of television broadcasts. Regular features included a Wednesday hit-parade guessing game called "Operation to Save the Earworm" and vodka soft-serve ice cream.

The bar is known for its uninhibited atmosphere. While unruly behavior can occur late at night, security staff intervene to keep disturbances outside and protect patrons. A distinctive feature of the interior is a dartboard in the back corner, where darts often fly over the hallway leading to the restrooms.

The venue does not display a clock, maintaining the illusion that it is still evening. Rolling shutters block out daylight and traffic noise. While other local breakfast spots have closed, the bar's mascot—a cow with udders spinning from the ceiling—remains in place.

For the 30th birthday, the theme is "Celebrating like back then." The event will include three kegs of free beer and 30 bottles of short drinks in Pfeffi, cherry, and Mexican flavors. The celebration begins at 7 p.m.
