Spain Nominates Hernández de Cos and Díaz for Key International Posts
Spain has officially put forward two high-profile candidates for leadership roles in major international organizations. Economist Pablo Hernández de Cos is seeking the presidency of the European Central Bank, while Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz is running for the head of the International Labour Organization, with voting set for November.
Spain has formally advanced two candidates for leadership positions in major international bodies, initiating a competitive race for key posts with voting scheduled for November. The nominations highlight the country's push for greater influence in global economic and labor governance.
Economist Pablo Hernández de Cos is seeking the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB). His candidacy follows the announcement that current President Christine Lagarde will step down in February 2027. Hernández de Cos, who previously served as governor of the Bank of Spain and currently directs the Bank for International Settlements in Switzerland, faces a known rival in Klaas Knot.
Eurozone nations were required to submit their nominations by November 6. The Eurogroup is set to review the candidates on Monday, though final selection will depend on political negotiations and geographic balancing among member governments.
In parallel, Labor Minister Yolanda Díaz has been nominated to lead the International Labour Organization (ILO). The ILO election is scheduled for November 16. Díaz competes against Gilbert Houngbo, who is considered the favorite, and Javier González-Olaechea. She stated that her campaign has incurred no direct costs and relies on institutional contacts.
Spain is also backing other candidates for upcoming international roles. Luis Planas is seeking the directorship of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a term starting in June 2027, while María Neira is among those vying to succeed Tedros Adhanom at the World Health Organization.
