Florida State dismisses athletics director Alford and appoints interim leader
Florida State University fired athletics director Michael Alford without cause on September 14 and named senior associate athletics director Bruce Warwick to lead the department while it conducts a national search.
Florida State University fired athletics director Michael Alford without cause on September 14 and named senior associate athletics director Bruce Warwick to lead the department while it conducts a national search.
University president Richard McCullough announced the decision on Monday morning, thanking Alford for his work with the institution and its athletes. Alford had led athletics since January 2022, after joining Seminole Boosters Inc. as president in autumn 2020.
The amount owed to him under a four-year agreement announced in August 2024 was not clear. McCullough later said the leadership change was needed to respond to rapid developments in college sports and to examine revenue growth and the administration required for future competition.
He said spending on college football was increasing because competing at the highest level required larger investment. Warwick said continuity and support for athletes, coaches and staff would remain priorities during the transition.
In a statement on X, Alford said he was proud of the department’s achievements, including championships, athletes’ academic development and facility improvements. He said a strong foundation was in place and expressed confidence that progress would continue.
The dismissal comes amid pressure on football coach Mike Norvell following two losing seasons and a 1-1 start. Florida State was listed as a 20.5-point underdog for its September 19 game at No. 10 Alabama.
Norvell, in his seventh season, has a 39-35 record at the university. Asked about him, McCullough praised his character, work with athletes and academic results, while emphasising the desire to win shared by the coach, players and university leaders.
If Norvell were replaced in the coming weeks or months, a new athletics director would be involved in selecting his successor alongside McCullough and Board of Trustees chairman Peter Collins. No such replacement was announced in the report.
McCullough has been university president for five years and rarely holds news conferences, although he often attends events supporting Seminoles athletes.
During Alford’s tenure, Florida State appointed Luke Loucks to lead men’s basketball, Link Jarrett in baseball, Brian Pensky in soccer, Brooke Wyckoff in women’s basketball and Sara Tisdale in lacrosse. The university launched its women’s lacrosse programme in spring 2025.
The soccer team won two titles under Pensky, including one in December 2025. Football facility projects during Alford’s time exceeded $400 million, covering changes to the west side of Doak Campbell Stadium and a dedicated football building.
The football facility broke ground in December 2022 and opened in October 2025. Alford’s decisions to incur debt, rearrange stadium seating and raise ticket prices in some sections drew criticism from thousands of longtime supporters.
McCullough’s explanation focused on future resources and administration, while his statement also acknowledged Alford’s service. The interim appointment provides leadership during a national recruitment process, with Warwick continuing from his existing senior role. The university did not announce a permanent successor on September 14.
